Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series, one of the most popular games in the world, thrilled its fans with the release of the GTA 6 trailer after a long wait. However, the 18-year-old autistic hacker behind the leak faced an indefinite “hospital sentence”.
The GTA 6 trailer, released on December 5th, managed to enter the Guinness World Records with 94 million views in just the first 24 hours. However, this great success was overshadowed by a development. Arion Kurtaj, an 18-year-old autistic hacker and a member of the international Lapsus$ hacker group, had leaked the game’s footage in advance.
Known for their cyber attacks on tech giants such as Uber, Nvidia, and Rockstar Games, the Lapsus$ hacker group is accused of causing millions of dollars in damages to companies. The British judge believed that Arion Kurtaj posed a “risk” to the public due to his abilities and tendency to commit crimes, and therefore gave the young hacker an indefinite “hospital sentence”.
Kurtaj, who was deemed unfit to stand trial due to his severe autism, will stay in a secure hospital for the rest of his life unless he is seen as a danger. The alleged intention behind Kurtaj’s actions, which were reported to involve violence and causing material damage while in custody, will be evaluated rather than criminal intent.
In the mental health assessment, it is stated that Kurtaj “expressed his intention to return to cyber crime as soon as possible and is highly motivated”.
