Alarm and Emergency Management Presidency (AKOM) issued an alarm for the expected heavy snowfall in Istanbul. Thousands of personnel were deployed and winter preparation works started. Following the consecutive statements made by meteorology experts, a specific time was given for the heavy snowfall. Along with meteorological warnings, 34 cities including Istanbul were warned to be prepared. The weather conditions will change significantly and the harsh winter season will begin.
AKOM and Meteorology issued warnings for the expected snowfall in the northern and highlands of Istanbul. During this period where sudden drops in temperature are expected, in addition to snowfall, heavy rain showers will also be effective in Istanbul. In this context, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Affairs Directorate (AKOM) stated that temperatures will decrease by 8-10 degrees throughout the city.
Within the scope of winter preparation works, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has 12 thousand personnel and more than 3 thousand vehicles and construction machines ready for duty. There are 275 thousand tons of salt in the storages to be used against icing. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality plans to provide a total of 60 thousand tons of salt to district municipalities. Snow plowing and salting teams will be on standby at 637 intervention points on a responsible road network of 4,023 kilometers.
CNN Turk Meteorology Consultant Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen stated that the wind, which is expected to blow at storm speeds in the northern regions, will also affect Istanbul. With the change in wind direction to the north, a decrease of 6-7 degrees in temperatures is expected. Snowfall is expected to be effective in Istanbul on Friday. The people of Istanbul are invited to review the precautions to be taken with the arrival of winter.
