Rogers, Austin, Chief of Staff Kelly Magsamen, and Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks in his letters, requested that they provide them with the information and documents they have regarding the Defense Secretary’s hospitalization, according to The Hill Gazette.
Rogers, who initiated an official investigation into Austin’s “secret” hospitalization, described the failure to promptly inform the authorities about the surgery as a “disgraceful situation” in his letter to the Secretary.
In his letter, Rogers stated, “Everything, from ongoing counter-terrorism operations to nuclear command and control, depends on the Defense Secretary’s decision-making capacity. The Department is designed to function as a strong institution and is not designed for a Secretary who conceals his inability to perform his duties.”
Rogers emphasized that in a time when wars are ongoing in Ukraine and Israel, it is absolutely unacceptable that the White House, and even Austin’s deputy, did not understand the situation. He stated that Austin needs to provide information on whether he directed his team not to inform the authorities about his hospitalization.
Rogers also asked the Defense Secretary to clarify whether he delegated his powers to his deputy Hicks, what steps were taken when he was hospitalized, and what military measures were taken within the US Central Command responsible for the Middle East.
Furthermore, in his letter to Hicks, Rogers expressed his shock at her lack of knowledge about the Secretary’s condition, stating, “It is concerning that you are acting without fully understanding the Defense Secretary’s condition.”
In his letter to Chief of Staff Magsamen, Rogers used the phrase, “As you should be aware, this lack of transparency is unforgivable and could have resulted in a disaster.”
