The Times of Israel newspaper reported that Benny Gantz, the leader of the Blue and White Party and a member of the Security Cabinet, along with cabinet members Gadi Eisenkot and Hili Tropper, will not attend today’s weekly “Emergency Government” meeting chaired by Benjamin Netanyahu.
Heated debates took place during the Security Cabinet meeting on January 4th between several ministers, including Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, and representatives of the military.
Ministers targeted military officials in response to allegations that the investigation into the events of October 7th would include “officials who supported the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005.”
Benny Gantz also intervened in the debate, shouting at ministers who targeted the Chief of Staff.
In a video message later released, Gantz held Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responsible for the ongoing controversy.
The “Emergency Government” was established in Israel on October 13th.
A statement from the Knesset confirmed that the “state of emergency government, which will operate during the war with Gaza, was approved with the support of 64 members of parliament against 4 opposing votes.”
According to Israel’s state television KAN, the government was formed through an agreement between Prime Minister Netanyahu and opposition leader Benny Gantz, with five members of Gantz’s party serving as ministers.
However, the leader of the main opposition party and former Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, refused to join this government.
